PG county needs to listen to our voices as far as ESOL. Next year they are thinking about cutting the parent liasons totally. Some people asked that they just cut the parent liasons in places that do not have an ESOL population, to which the county said "all parents have trouble navigating the system. Why should we take away parent liasons from some parents and not all." SERIOUSLY! But some parents cant even use their voices to ask. Get your funding together PG.
I'm totally with Ellen. My school is very fortunate since our current Parent Liason is also a certified ESOL teacher so we'll be able to keep her on the staff using TITLE 1 funds.
Also, I agree that the primary grades often get the short end of the stick when it comes to ESOL and SPED supports. It often seems that if we're not in a testing grade, we're not important. However, if the kids got the supports they need BEFORE they hit a testing grade, it wouldn't be such a struggle!
We are 4 teachers who teach in Early Childhood classrooms in DC and Prince George's county. Our goal is to give our students the education they deserve. After teaching and being witnesses to what goes on in underperforming schools, we all have thoughts about how to make the goal of quality education attainable. We hope to empower all teachers to feel that their opinions and thoughts can make a difference. Each of us has a voice that should be heard. Our voices contain knowledge, carefully thought out ideas and feedback for the schools that we work in. We believe one of the main reasons why quality education is not a reality in many schools is a lack of communication and sharing of teacher and administrative voices. If we, as educators put our voices together, we can be heard!!!!
